How to Choose a Contractor | Everybody has their renovation contractor horror stories!
They didn’t show up. The job was not done on time. The costs skyrocketed mid way through the project. The project never gets completed. Worst case scenario? The contractor goes bankrupt. The decision to renovate your home, whether a newly purchased property or an older house in need of an upgrade, shouldn’t cause anxiety and frustration.
Here are our top five rules when choosing your contractor to ensure an effective, efficient and exceptional renovation experience.
1. REFERRALS ARE YOUR BEST RESOURCE
Reach out to your family, your friends, your colleagues and even your extended community on social media to help find a trustworthy, hard working and qualified professional for your job. Upon receiving recommendations, inquire what exactly it was that made that contractor incredible, if there were any issues whatsoever that you could address in your initial meeting with them and if they would use that contractor again.
2. DO A CREDENTIAL CHECK
Visit the contractors website and social media pages, checking specifically for complaints and/or testimonials from happy customers. Double check that they have all of the required credentials and licenses for your area, whether or not they are a member of professional associations and if they have completed ongoing education and training to keep up with the times.
3. MEET THE CONTRACTORS
Your initial meeting is a great opportunity to ‘interview’ potential candidates and ensure that you can work and communicate easily with one another. Ask them all of your burning questions and create time and space for them to ask you questions too, ensuring that you both feel this is a good fit. We recommend meeting 1-3 candidates before making your big decision. Then check the number of jobs the contractor is working on at once, confirm a schedule with your contractor (ensure they inform you of any vacations or break.
4. DO A REFERENCE CHECK
Head online to Houzz or Yelp to check the contractors reviews, project gallery and previous client experiences. You can even ask your contractor for references from past projects or visit a job site yourself to see how safe, clean and well-done the work really is.
5. WRITE A CONTRACT
Once you have received quotes and bids from various contractors and selected the one who fits your requirements it is time to get writing. Ensure the contract indicates the payment schedule, proof of insurance and workers compensation, timeline and deadlines for project phases and the materials required and used during the project.
These five steps will set you off on the right foot to finding a contractor that will help you sleep at night, without the worry and stress that can come along with bigrenovation projects.
